Professor Desmond Yip is a graduate of the University of Sydney training in medical oncologythe study, diagnosis and treatment of cancer at Westmead Hospital and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital prior to a three-year Fellowship at the Guy’s and St Thomas’s Hospital in London.
He is a Senior Staff Specialist in Medical Oncology at the Canberra Region Cancera disease where abnormal cells split without control and spread to other nearby body tissue and/or organs Centre at The Canberra Hospital. His main clinical and research interests are in the area of gastrointestinal oncology and developmental therapeutics of cancer drugs. He also has subspecialty interests in renal cell carcinomacancer arising from tissues that line organs and gastrointestinal stromal tumours.
He is an academic oncologista doctor who specialises in the study, diagnosis and treatment of cancer who has expertise in novel cancer drug development and has a number of translational research collaborations with laboratory scientists at the Australian National University and Queensland Medical Research Institute. He is an active member of the Australasian Gastrointestinal Trials Group (AGITG) serving on clinical trial management committees as well as leading an international multicentre study. He has academic appointments at the Australian National University, and University of Sydney.
