The Bridgeview Hotel in Willoughby was the proud
host of the Inaugural Baikies Ride for
Rare Cancers on Saturday 24th November. The gathering concluded a
full day event which commenced with around 40 avid motorbike riders and car enthusiasts
travelling from Willoughby to Wisemans Ferry and back.
The day raising much needed funds and creating
awareness for Rare Cancers Australia.
The fundraiser was inspired by Peter J Baikie, who
passed away from a rare cancer 12 months ago. His battle begun in 2015 when Peter was
diagnosed with primary pulmonary synovial sarcoma, a very rare form of cancer
which affects one in three million people. His wife Angela spoke of the
struggle they had when Peter was diagnosed, and that no one knew about his
cancer and how the need for research into rare forms of cancer is so important.
Hosted and organised by his great mate Sean Costello,
the fundraising event was attended by close friends and family. The day was a
celebration of Peters life and a true testament to the man he was. He was a
mechanic by trade and loved his cars and motorbikes. With his wife Angela and
daughter Amelia riding in a vintage car in memory of a beloved husband and
Angela spoke of Peter’s love for his bikes and his
connection and bond with the Bridgeview Hotel where he gathered weekly with his
close friends and family. She said, ‘he would be proud to know we celebrated
his anniversary with an event that included motorbikes and vintage cars and
raising funds for research into rare cancers.’
Special shout out to locals Karen and Howard who
enthusiastically sold raffle tickets throughout the evening and managed to
organise some brilliant raffle prizes from local businesses operating in and
around the Willoughby community.
